Help eliminate torture breeding
Why is there torture for small animals?
Whether floppy ears, unusual fur color or dwarfism: many adults and children find the unusual appearance of so-called pets to be particularly sweet or cute. However, these are usually breeding characteristics that were deliberately bred into the animals. They are always associated with animal suffering and often lead to serious illnesses.
In addition to genetically bred diseases, breeding often also influences the behavior of animals. A significantly changed appearance, for example due to a breeding change in body shape or coat color, can affect the animals’ mutual communication and lead to aggression and fear. Rabbits and guinea pigs are actually very sociable creatures that live in social groups and structures and interact with each other in a variety of ways.
In order to meet people’s aesthetic ideals and win awards at breeding exhibitions, animals are increasingly being bred with unnatural characteristics. The Life Of A Rabbit: Due to a limited gene pool, this often occurs through inbreeding, i.e. the mating of related animals, which further exacerbates the problem of resulting genetic diseases.
The existing animal protection law only provides limited protection for the affected animals. According to §11 b it is forbidden to breed animals with traits that cause them to suffer, but there is still no corresponding definition of torture breeding in the law
Which breeds are torture bred?
The following “breeds” are very popular in rabbit and guinea pig farming. Nevertheless, it is a case of torturous breeding that is associated with enormous animal suffering.
1. Aries Rabbit:
Ram rabbits are known for their long floppy ears and a supposedly cute appearance. But it is precisely this appearance that causes the animals great suffering and restrictions in their daily lives. The natural ear shape of rabbits is erect, but definitely not lop-eared. The hanging ears bend the rabbit’s ear canal and make it more difficult for air to enter. This promotes painful inflammation in the ear canal, which is often long-term and difficult to treat. Poorly ventilated ear canals also mean limited sound wave transmission, which means that the affected rabbits cannot hear as well as their prick-eared counterparts. [1]
Lop-eared rabbits also limit their mobility because the long ears often drag on the ground. As a result, animals often step on them and are more susceptible to painful injuries from their environment or fellow animals. GUINEA PIG, RABBIT Rabbits are flight animals that rely on senses such as hearing and sight. However, it’s not just their hearing that suffers from their long lop-eared ears; the animals’ field of vision is also enormously restricted.
2. Teddy rabbit:
Teddy rabbits are a so-called long-haired breed, which also includes Angora rabbits. Their typical feature is very long and fine fur. But it is precisely this fur that causes suffering and stress for the rabbits.
Rabbits that have not been bred can easily groom and keep their own natural hair clean. However, this is not possible with long-haired rabbits because the cultured permanent fur growth and the unnatural length of the hair often lead to matting and sticking. Due to breeding reasons, it is therefore necessary for animal owners to comb the rabbits’ long hair and shear the animals, otherwise they represent a breeding ground for parasites and inflammatory wounds. This constant personal care is a particularly stressful and strenuous undertaking for Rabbits as escape animals, which is associated with a high risk of injury, for example through cuts. Tangles in the fur are not only particularly painful for the animals, but also pose the risk of maggot infestation due to dangerous fecal smears and inflamed areas of the body.
The long fur can lead to heat build-up, especially in summer, and put the animals in a life-threatening situation. In addition, the rabbits are susceptible to corneal infections because the long hair hangs in their eyes and constantly rubs against them. Since the animals ingest large amounts of long hair while grooming, this often leads to blockages in the intestinal area. In addition, the rabbits’ long hair limits their mobility and field of vision and therefore cannot lead a species-appropriate life.
3. Dwarf rabbits:
Dwarf rabbits are rabbits weighing up to 2 kilograms. A characteristic of dwarf rabbits is the severely shortened head, which often leads to dental problems and recurring pain and stress as a result of dental treatment. Due to the misalignment of the teeth, the rabbits cannot absorb enough food, which can quickly lead to a life-threatening situation given the animals’ highly sensitive digestive tract. BREEDS OF DECORATIVE RABBITS Other complaints include narrowing in the area of the nasolacrimal duct, which can cause chronic runny nose and eye inflammation, as well as difficulty breathing. [3]
Purebred dwarf rabbits usually weigh less than 1.5 kilograms. When breeding homozygous rabbits, a genetic error occurs that leads to the death of most young animals. Continued breeding to create smaller and cuter rabbits inflicts enormous lifelong pain and suffering on the animals. [2]
4. Albino rabbits:
Albinos are rabbits with completely white fur, pink skin and red eyes. The reason for the white fur color is the lack of the pigment melanin, which is responsible for darkening the skin and fur. The red color of the eyes is particularly critical, as it often leads to severe visual impairment in the animals. The rabbits do not see clearly, perceive contrasts more poorly and are usually nearsighted or farsighted.
Albinos are also very sensitive to light and are more prone to sunburn and skin problems. While other rabbits enjoy being outside in the summer without any problems, for albino rabbits it means suffering and stress. Can Rabbits Love People The light-sensitive eyes react very quickly to the strong sunlight, so that the visual impairment that is usually already present becomes worse. Even a short stay in the sun can cause painful sunburn on the animals’ sensitive skin, so albino rabbits
