Egg laying occurs earlier
One large-scale study found that birds lay eggs an average of 6.6 days earlier per decade.
The North American common murrha has seen its breeding date increase by 24 days per decade.
North American tree swallows are nesting 9 days earlier than they were 30 years ago, consistent with an increase in average spring temperatures.
Migration times are changing
Birds migrate earlier in the spring. A study of 63 years of data for 96 species of migrant birds in Canada found that 27 species significantly changed their arrival dates, with most arriving earlier due to warmer spring temperatures.
Birds also appear to be delaying their fall departures: in a study of 13 North American passerines, 6 species were found to be delaying their departure dates due to global warming.Some birds in Europe cannot even migrate all together.
The birds' behavior and their surroundings become inappropriate
Much of a bird’s life cycle and behavior is closely tied to environmental cues, such as the changing seasons. Mismatch occurs when birds are unable to change their behavior, such as the timing of breeding, enough to coincide with changes in the environment, such as when prey is available.
Long-distance migrants are particularly at risk of mismatch because they have a harder time knowing what conditions might be like at the end of their migration journey. For example, warblers in North America do not migrate earlier from their neotropical winter habitats, despite earlier sources in their northern breeding ranges—this risks a late arrival after spring food sources on the breeding grounds have disappeared.
Distributions change
Bird populations are expected to shift poleward or to higher elevations to remain at ideal temperatures as climate changes.
A study of 35 North American warbler species found that the distribution range of seven species (prothonotary warbler, blue-winged warbler, golden-winged warbler, gray-skinned warbler, pine warbler, hooded warbler and hooded warbler) has shifted significantly northward over the last 24 years, an average of 65 miles. None of the birds moved south.
Data from the Ontario Bird Breeding Atlas shows that “southern” bird species such as the tufted tit, blue-grey nibbler, northern mockingbird and red-bellied woodpecker have increased in numbers and expanded their range north in Ontario compared to 20 years ago. .
These climate changes are not always the solution to a warming climate. Birds on the move may become stymied in their attempts to find new habitats due to fragmentation, human development, or natural geological features such as large bodies of water.
Ecological communities destroyed
Global warming can change entire ecological communities. The food and nesting material that birds depend on may no longer be there. Birds may encounter new prey, parasites, competitors, and predators for which they are not adapted.
In northern Hudson Bay, mosquitoes peak in early spring. Breeding bigheaded Murrays that breed in the area have not adjusted their behavior, and the combination of heat and mosquitoes is causing increased egg loss and increased adult mortality.
Some parts of southwestern Ontario may have 14 fewer warbler species than there currently are. This may lead to increased outbreaks of some forest pests, such as spruce buds.
In 2005, there was unprecedented destruction of seabird colonies on the Pacific coast of North America. Only 8% of Cassin’s Auklets nesting on Triangle Island were successful. This is because late northerly winds delayed coastal upwelling, affecting plankton growth and causing a decline in the fish species on which seabirds depend.
Tufted puffins at Canadian sites have breeding success near freezing when the water is warmest, which could mean Canada’s largest breeding colony for the species, Scott Island Marine National Sanctuary, will become unsuitable for tufted puffins if the water continues to warm.
Extinction risks are growing
Birds most at risk of extinction as a result of climate change are those with limited ranges, poor ability to move their range, small populations, or those already facing conservation challenges.
Migratory birds are especially vulnerable to the effects of climate change because they depend on a variety of habitats and habitats.
Arctic birds are particularly vulnerable – they are experiencing rapid warming and at least 85 of the world’s bird species breed in global Arctic regions. Retreating sea ice could have serious consequences for ivory gulls that forage along the sea ice. Canada ivory gulls have already declined by 90% over the past two decades.
Climate change has reduced bird nesting success on farmland by nearly half
Periods of extreme hot and cold temperatures in agricultural areas reduce the likelihood of at least one chick per nest successfully fledging by 46 percent. In cities, this effect is not so noticeable, and in forests it is even reversed due to tree crowns regulating temperature changes. Such conclusions are contained in an article published in the journal Science.
Habitat disturbance is the leading cause of biodiversity loss in terrestrial ecosystems. The impact of climate change has also been increasing in recent decades and is expected to lead to widespread extirpation of species in the future. The impacts of climate change and anthropogenic habitat conversion on species ecology are most often studied separately, although the future of biodiversity depends on their combined impacts. For example, the expansion of farmland leads to the fact that the vegetation cover becomes more primitive, and the cultivation of crops is accompanied by the use of pesticides, and this damages the food supply of birds – the number and diversity of insects decreases.
At the same time, agriculture also affects the microclimate: when tree canopies become smaller, complex microhabitats that mitigate the effects of extreme low and high temperatures on living organisms disappear. This is especially noticeable in birds: in the first weeks of life, chicks do not yet have perfect thermoregulation, and if a heat wave occurs, this can lead to a sharp drop in population numbers.
