ToggleMethodology “how to teach a parrot to talk” and six key factors for successful training
Here we discuss the methodology of how to teach a parrot to speak, as well as 7 key factors that influence the effectiveness of teaching conversation. It is worth paying special attention to these factors, because… They are the ones who make a wonderful teacher out of one person, and a very bad one out of another. The advantages of the presented approach are that even if you do not teach conversation, the classes will help to establish contact and form a good relationship with the parrot.
A number of owners have a question about whether it is possible to teach a parrot to speak at all. It depends on the type of bird, its personality and the owner’s ability to act as a teacher. The most popular talking feathered pets are wavy, gray, necklace, cockatoos, amazons and macaws. Some species, such as cockatiels or rosellas, are capable of learning one or two words in rare cases, but they are good at reproducing various sounds and melodies.
How should you teach a parrot to talk?
Below is a technique for teaching a parrot to speak. During training, personal contact between a person and his winged friend is important. The use of auxiliary equipment such as tape recorders, voice recorders and computers is not recommended.
Choose in advance a couple of words or phrases that you will teach.
During training, the pet can sit both in the cage and outside it, for example, on your hand, a play stand or a table perch.
Try to choose moments for studying when the student is focused on you.
The lesson itself goes as follows: the teacher, being next to the bird, repeats the necessary phrases, alternating them among themselves (10-20 times one phrase, 10-20 times the second, and so on).
It is advisable to use these phrases not only during classes, but also in everyday life. This promotes memorization.
If you feel that the bird is losing interest, then stop the activity.
What influences the effectiveness of teaching a parrot to talk?
How and why can some people quickly teach a parrot to speak, while others fail? One of the reasons is, of course, patience, which teachers often lack, and they quit classes. But this is not the only reason that affects the effectiveness of training. We have identified seven factors, the observance of which will help you turn into a wonderful teacher of human speech. Conversation is just one of the possible options for joint activities with a bird, and the key factor in training and education is trust. When a bird sees you as a friend and companion, it will be interested in copying your actions, behavior, and learning new things from you, including conversation. How to gain trust is a separate big topic. Here are the most common mistakes that novice owners make: attempts to grab the bird with your hand, violation of your pet’s personal zone, sudden movements, screams, other actions that frighten the bird, attempts to force events and gain trust in one day.
Factor 1: Choose the right class time.
Classes should be conducted regularly – if possible, it is optimal to conduct lessons daily. Classes can be carried out several times a day, but the duration of each lesson is no more than 5-10 minutes; longer exercises will bore the parrot.
Factor 2. What words to start with?
It is generally accepted that birds perceive vowels and sibilant consonants well. It is better to learn several phrases at the same time, because… Your pet may simply not like a certain phrase or word, and he will not try to remember or reproduce it. Whatever phrases you choose to teach your parrot to speak, during the word lesson you need to pronounce the words clearly and clearly. Say the selected phrase 10-15 times. After the next phrase. And so on.
Factor 3: Parrots love emotional speech.
If you rattle out a phrase like a robot, then such sounds will turn into the background for your pet, and he will stop perceiving them. Words spoken with emotion from the bottom of the heart are remembered much better and faster. As a converse consequence, avoid using dissonant words. Some gifted birds are able to immediately remember a random word spoken with maximum emotion the first time, so watch your speech.
Factor 4: Create a pleasant atmosphere and be in a good mood.
Parrots feel emotions very well, so start the lesson only in a good mood. Your pet should also be in a good mood – if he is hungry, wants to sleep, or, on the contrary, flies away, then postpone the lesson. While studying, it is advisable not to be distracted by extraneous sounds, although it is not at all necessary to achieve complete silence around. If your pet begins to lose interest during a lesson, stop the lesson. During the lesson, place the bird on your finger or hand and hold it in front of you. If the bird is in a cage, then you must be near the cage.
Factor 5. Sometimes praise is more valuable than money... more precisely, in our case, more expensive than seeds.
During training, address your pet affectionately and praise. If you see that the bird is listening carefully to you or trying to say something, praise even more actively and emotionally. In addition to praise, the reward can be a treat. What your pet prefers – a treat or emotional praise – you must determine yourself.
